Of the United States of his day, the American Indian Cowboy Humorist and Trick Roper Will Rogers said: "What the country needs is dirtier fingernails and cleaner minds." It's what I need too.
Tim and I have been watching a lot of movies lately. It’s been an eclectic mix, a product of the English-language selection at our neighborhood Blockbuster, the occasional, very slow download and two bouts of sickness (a double feature!) in two weeks.
Yesterday, my 29th birthday, I spent the entire day in bed. There was a nasty bug in my stomach. But at least the movies were good.
When Harry Met Sally is one of my favorites, going back to childhood. Tim and I watch it every December.
A list from the last two weeks:
Batman: Dark Knight - Another well-produced, well-acted comic book movie. What is there to say? It’s not my thing. But, once a year, why not?
Civil War - Who knew a nine-part series on the Civil War could be so, uh, enjoyable?
Dan in Real Life - The premise is silly. But I’ll admit, I loved it.
National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation - Classic John Hughs.
My Blueberry Nights - Pretty people write letters to each other, fall in love.
Le Divorce - I can’t believe we rented it, much less watched it all the way through. So terrible.
When Harry Met Sally - A Christmas tradition in the Stelloh-Moon household
Atonement - Better than the reviews, I thought. Then again, I’m a sucker for a love story, especially one with a horrible ending and a starlet that looks freakishly like pre-shoplift Winona Ryder.
Death Proof - Tim appreciates Tarantino more than I do, but I laughed enough times to make it worth a watch.
Eastern Promises - Overrated, I think. And Naomi Watts twice in two weeks is way, way too much.
Alice doesn’t live here anymore - Every bit as excruciating as life. It watches like an oddball documentary on single motherhood. Wonderful.
Raising Arizona - Another classic: “Biology and the prejudices of others conspired to keep us childless.”
Venus - It’s not often that a very old man who gropes girls is so charming.
Next up: There seem to be some promising movies here.
